Boston - One Month In

February 16, 2019 by SingYu Lam in Travel

Every time I’ve gone somewhere else, I’ve planned on writing down my impressions for my first month there. This will be my first time actually doing it.

I can be endlessly entertained looking out an airplane window.

YYZ → BOS

It was warm and raining heavily on the first day, and since then Boston has constantly flip flopped between snow and rain. I can’t complain though, because at least we’ve been spared from the polar vortex unlike the rest of north eastern NA.

You know you’ve gone off the deep end when you look at lamps and start imagining how to set them up in Keyshot.

This alarm clock has saved me in the mornings.

There’s something I love about these off kilter pipes and the staggered shadows they cast on the wall.

Between opening a bank account, looking for a new place, and a myriad of other things, I haven’t really had a chance to explore the city much. The next 5 will have to be more than just my commute to and from work.

Not gonna lie, we’ve got pretty sweet T-shirts.

Interns don’t need names.

It’s actually super inconvenient to get a Charlie Card (Boston’s hard plastic transit cards), and even now in February I still haven’t been able to set aside the time to go and get one. Instead, I’ve been using these paper monthly Link Passes.

You can’t buy them from the machines that are in every station, which is mind-bogglingly stupid. They’re only available at a select few. The main “Charlie Card Store” at Downtown Crossing is only open during work hours, and isn’t open on the weekends… I can’t believe it but this makes Toronto’s Presto cards sound quite decent.

It also sucks that not many places accept foreign ID—I’ve been carded and denied more than once.

I love how historic Boston is, but you’ve really got to watch your step. Uneven sidewalks, ancient roads that are falling apart, and pedestrian lights that don’t work. People on foot are second class citizens to the ones in cars.

I might’ve been busy, but you’re never too busy to drop by Muji.

One of those rare weekends I took some time to wander around.
