LA | 04 - Pasadena Art Center

September 21, 2016 by SingYu Lam in Travel

Going to see the Art Center grad show was really the main reason why I went down to LA in the first place. Art Center is the place to be for the best of the best and I wanted the chance to experience it first hand.

Getting excited just seeing the words Pasadena.

I could get used to views like this.

The food was delicious in the cafeteria. When I asked the grads about it later though, it seems it was improved just for today only. At least my impression was good while it lasted.

The infamous Art Center bridge.

I really have no idea what this arrow meant. Pasadena style wayfinding.

Time for the main attraction of the day.

Wait a second this isn't my major.

Simply amazing.

I can see the pixels. Still 10/10 though.

Two words. Cork. Wheels. Cork wheels. That's awesome.

Box pedestals are just too mainstream.

I always love seeing these small touches. Attention to detail is key.

They left this running the whole time. 5-axis CNC mill.

After the eye candy in Transportation Design, I finally made my way to Product Design. You can see it in the distance if you look closely.

Product isn't nearly as flashy as Transportation Design, but the atmosphere was definitely different. There was a much more casual vibe (not to mention it was more brightly lit) and a lot of interaction happened between the attendees, the grads, and their work.

Talking to the grads, learning from their work, and even meeting faculty was truly an eye opening experience for me. The graduates were helpful, approachable, and always willing to give advice and answer questions. This was the third graduation show I visited this summer so it definitely help put things in perspective, as well as to take down ideas for what to do for my own eventual one as well.

After spending hours walking around the school, I took a breather to walk around the perimeter of the campus. The mountain top view is quite the sight for sore eyes.

Art Center really loves their circle because you can find it everywhere.

On their vending machines.

Even on their mirrors. I should have expected nothing less.

Worth every bit of the 3500km trip here.
